Speed reading is a tool to improve your overall personality. It is a combination of techniques which will make you read faster. There are numerous methods to learn and practice speed reading technique, computer programs being one of them. Having weighed all the various ways in which you can learn to speed read, and having narrowed down to software, what are the parameters that you should look before finalizing the software to be used?
Efficient software helps you eliminate your current reading style or habit. Mostly, we read by sub-vocalizing the texts we read. We need to hear the words aloud to understand what we are reading. Software should have techniques to completely eliminate this habit of reading.
Reading speed does not improve with one session. Ideal software should check your current reading speed and pace the reading in such a manner that the increase in speed is gradual. A rhythm needs to be developed and in the process re-reading be completely prevented.
It should have an in built speed testing program. As you begin the test should calculate your reading speed. As you progress, tests should be conducted at frequent intervals to measure your improvement.
Training should be based on the individual and software should have the capability to customize training to suit individual needs. If you have the potential to read faster, software should be able to challenge your skills and push you further up.
Reading the same content can be boring and monotonous. Software should provide varied reading material to keep the interest on. Also it should have ample material so that the same texts do not keep popping up on the screen.
A speed reading training program is meaningless without a reading comprehension test. Tracking comprehension levels at every stage is equally important. Speed reading is not about compromising comprehension for speed. Ideally, the comprehension tests should be done along with the reading speed test.
Some software also come with the advantage of letting the user use the material that he wants to use. This is beneficial since while learning to speed read, you can finish reading the material that you wanted to as well as get trained to read faster.
An option to change the visible look and feel of the program will help in focusing on the training. You can create what you like so that you do not lose interest with time.
It will be an advantage to plot your progress in graphs and charts. You can evaluate the trend of learning as well as be able to correct if anything is amiss.
A good sales and technical support team is a must. When you get started, there will be umpteen unanswered questions and it is important that a good technical team is available to address those questions. You can get bogged down if you start learning with lot of questions in your mind and no answers. In case of any other issues with software functioning, the team should be able to fix quickly so that your training regime is not adversely affected.
