An Introduction to Speed Reading

By Kathy Glee Platinum Quality Author

Ever heard of speed reading and wondered what it was? We have all been taught to read and learn since we were kids. How did we all begin the journey? We read out aloud our favorite stories, read out aloud our text books so that the listener, be it a parent or a teacher could correct our pronunciations. Over the years, as we had better wisdom, we have been reading to ourselves with that tiny inner voice acting as medium to convert the text into audio.

Speed reading is not about skimming or scanning information while you read, but its reading through and between words, culling out the information that you need. It is just a myth that speed readers can not really assimilate the information that they read. Speed readers look for the information that they need while reading and that helps them read faster.

When we read, we are not reading word by word but actually read words by blocks. A speed reader picks the words that are required to make sense of the whole sentence and moves on unlike a slow reader who tries to understand the meaning of all words to make sense of the sentence. Also, a speed reader seldom needs to go back to words that he has already passed to comprehend the sentence. This creates a flow of reading and helps the reader to read faster.

Having read about speed reading, the reader may be wondering how to differentiate one from a normal reader. By accepted standards, a normal reader reads at a pace of 250 words a minute while a speed reader would read anywhere between 1000 to 14000 words a minute. Now if you could master reading at 14000 words a minute without compromising on comprehension, you could finish off a normal ebook in less than a minute!

Speed reading is not about tradeoff between faster reading and better comprehension, but in the long run as you master this tool you will be able to hold more information in your short term memory. There are various ways to get started to master this technique. The best way is to self start, probably with the emails that you receive. You could also take help from speed reading software. The software would guide you through the initial stages when you feel you cannot be on your own feet.

As in mastering any technique, there is no shortcut to become a good speed reader. The best and the time tested way is to practice the technique once you are introduced to it. It is not a miracle that will happen overnight to many of us, but we can be good speed readers with diligence and hard work.

In a nutshell, speed reading is a collation of techniques which helps you read faster yet comprehend the information available. It can be fun learning and sustaining speed reading especially when you have millions of word materials, be it books or magazines or newspapers, to be read in just one lifetime!
