It all began with an experiment conducted by educational specialists researching a topic called visual acuity. These specialists designed a machine which could flash images at varying speeds on a screen. The experiment involved flashing pictures of air planes on the screen displayed for participants. The pictures flashed were large in size at the beginning of the experiment. As the experiment progressed, the size was gradually reduced and speed of display increased. The participants were trained and at the end of the training the participants could identify minute pictures of different air planes displayed only for one-five-hundredth of a second. The results of the experiment gave birth to speed reading techniques.
The US Air force was the first to tap the results of this experiment. They redid the experiment with words and found that an average human could read about four words flashed for one-five-hundredth of a second. This led to the conclusion that training could improve reading speeds and also that reading gives way to skimming words with advanced training.
The improvement in reading speed is because of the improvement in visual processing. The training to improve reading speed involved techniques to train the eye to move in a paced manner. However, initial experiments in a classroom like environment showed that once out of the created environment readers slid back to their original reading speed.
The early experiments conducted did prove that by improving visual processing, reading speed improves considerably but it did not have lasting effect. It took another ten years for a school teacher to unravel the mystery behind retaining the reading speed gained. While forcing herself to read faster, she is said to have brushed off the pages of the book in desperation. It was then that she notices that the sweeping motion of her hand made her actually read smoother. Later she started using her hand as a pacer to read and this method was christened Wood Method after her. This was later called Reading Dynamics. It was this school teacher who coined the name Speed Reading.
There are lot of courses and books designed to enhance the reading speed of a reader. Some even claim to help you attain reading speed of 10,000 words per minute. Such courses not only promise to increase the reading speed but also increase the reading comprehension.
Speed reading is not a mystery as it may sound. It is a combination of various reading techniques integrated in an impeccable manner to improve the reading speed and reading comprehension. With higher speed of reading memory retention also improves.
The techniques that lead one to become a speed reader are easy to follow and mainly tame the movement of the eyes. You should be interested in reading and should have a determination to become an ace reader. You can use any of the courses available or enroll yourself for a classroom session. However if you want to start off from the comfort of your home check out the speed reading software.
