In speed reading, self-training works. It absolutely works 100%. However, for some people it can be difficult, because it can be hard to accurately track your progress. This can end up reducing self-confidence, and lessening the effectiveness if the training.
There are many colleges that offer courses in speed reading. Usually, it's not a full-length course - just a few days. These short courses improve your study skills, reading comprehension, and expand your vocabulary. Courses like these offered through seminars or college programs can be extremely expensive, and are only hosted in specific areas, so they are not usually a viable option for someone who just wants to learn the quick and easy way.
This is where people usually turn to speed reading software. These products can cost anything from $50 to $500 - much cheaper than courses & seminars, but still quite expensive. The main benefit of using software over another kind of speed reading product is that you can usually set it up to fit your own specific needs. Software usually acts as a guide for you and your reading skills that makes sure you stay on the right track while improving.
There are plenty of different software products, like Rocket Reader, Bullet Read, Eye Q, Speed Reading Trainer, etc. However, as I said before, these are still pretty expensive.
The next option is downloading an audio-course. These are cheaper than the seminars, and cheaper than the software (usually), and are convenient if you have the time to sit at your computer and listen. I've seen short ten-minute audio clips, and ten-day series' - and the problem is the same with all of them: they need to try and teach everyone the same lesson, and therefore end up with very poor results overall.
