Why Are We Not Speed Readers

Why are we all not ace readers? From the time we are introduced to reading, we have been instructed to read each word aloud. Then by habit we have been reading each word aloud, not just to correct pronunciation but also to understand the word meaning. This is a phenomenon called sub-vocalization. This reduces our reading speed considerably.

The urge in us, which has been built since childhood, to hear each word either aloud or silently as we read restricts our reading speed. The issue with this reading habit is that you can read only at the pace of hearing. The key to improve reading speed is to break away from this habit and read as fast as you think and not hear.

Most people complain that they do not understand what they read unless they hear it. Sadly, this is what restricts a person from improving the reading speed. The good news is that this is only a myth. As you learn to read without hearing each word, you not only improve your reading speed but also your reading comprehension. Once you acquire the habit of reading at the speed of your thoughts, then you also master to read words by blocks and comprehend the meaning of a group of words at a glance.

A normal reader reads at the pace of 200 to 400 words a minute. By just breaking away from the bait of reading by hearing you can improve this speed up to three times. It is important to understand that speed readers are also great at comprehending and memorizing what they read. It is again a myth that speed readers are only good at the pace of reading.

Kids take off to learning the habit of speed reading faster than adults. The sooner you expose a person to speed reading in life, the faster he learns it. If you are a college going student or an executive at work, it should deter you to getting introduced to speed reading thinking it is too late.

Speed reading is skill that can be acquired which helps you read faster and comprehend better. When you read with the purpose or intent to improve your reading speed, you consciously read faster. This purpose is what is required to improve your reading efficiency.

Speed reading is a self improvement tool. The desire to master has to come from within. You did not learn to drive a car the day you were introduced to driving. The skill was mastered over a period of time. As you became a successful driver, your efficiency improved. You also felt happy at having mastered another skill. Speed reading is just another self development technique which enables you to read faster and hence read much more than what you can today.

As you get introduced to speed reading through some simple steps, bear in mind your driving lessons. You can master the skill only with self discipline and practice. Get yourself with a good book and get started on the new journey today.
