Many people stay away from learning the techniques of speed reading thinking it is too complicated to learn them. However this is not true. Anyone can learn these techniques and make the most out of it. Here are some simple tips to help you get started with speed reading.
- Before you start reading any material, be sure to skim the contents. Almost all of the reading material will have some parts which do not really give any information. Even when you are reading a book there will be some chapters you can skip without compromising on the information.
- You can read better and also comprehend better when you are in a relaxed state of mind. Be sure to be relaxed and free from any thoughts running in your head so that you are able to concentrate on what you are reading.
- Try to read in a solitary place. Lot of distractions around you while reading will limit the pace of reading as well. If you are constrained by space or it is an absolute must to read amidst lot of noise, it is preferable to use ear plugs.
- All sentences have keywords which are what conveys the information. Focus on these keywords and you can probably omit reading the other words.
- Always look for the 'meat' in the book that you are reading. There will be lot of frills and skin added to the books to make it filling but the core of the book will be limited to maybe sixty percent of all words.
- Setting a goal is important and equally important to stay determined till the goal is achieved. Check your current reading speed and set a goal much higher than that. Work patiently to achieve it gradually and steadily.
- Reading speed is affected with limited vocabulary. Keep on working towards improving your vocabulary. Many a times you tend to read certain words again and again because you do not understand the meaning. An improved vocabulary will help you get over rereading thereby increasing the reading speed.
- Keep practicing till you become and ace reader. Most of us tend to give up once we feel we gave gained some speed in reading. But unless you practice diligently till speed reading becomes a habit, you are sure to return to you original reading speed.
- Focus on what you are reading. a simple tip to improve your focus is to use your forefinger to highlights the words you are reading. by moving the finger along the text as you read ensures that the focus of your eye does not wander elsewhere.
- Improving your peripheral vision also aids in improving the reading speed. By keeping the reading material at some distance from your eyes you can widen the eye span. You will then be able to see more words at a glance. Practice on improving the number of words that you see at a glance. As the word blocks grow in size so will your reading speed.

Before working on speed reading techniques, you need to determine how fast you can read. This will help you increase speed reading by making it easy to keep track of your progress.
The normal person can read 250-350 words of literature or non-technical texts per minute, but a fast reading speed is between 500-700 words per minute. Grab a good book and calculate the number of words in the page by counting the number of words in the first five lines. Divide this by five to get the average number of words per line. Count the number of lines in the next five pages and divide this by five to obtain the average number of lines on each page. Increase both figures to obtain the average number of words on each page.
