The history of speed reading all started with psychologists and educational specialists working on the visual acuity question devised the tachistoscope. This is where images would be put up on a screen and people would identify them. The images where gradually reduced in size and the flash rate was increased. With continued training it was found that the average person could identify very minute images when flashed for only one-five-hundredth of a second. The results where found to branch over to reading also.
The U.S. Air Force began flashing four words onto a screen at rates of one five-hundredth of a second with full recognition by the reader. With continued training it was thought that reading speeds could be increased from reading speed to skimming speed. Later on in the 1940's the Harvard Business School developed the first film aided course designed to widen the reader's field of focus in order to increase reading speed.
In the late 1950's the first portable device was created by a researcher that was a school-teacher named Evelyn Wood. She discovered that the sweeping motion of her hand across the page caught the attention of her eyes, and helped her eyes move more smoothly across the page. The "Wood Method" she created focused on increasing reading speed with the use of a guide such as your finger or and index card.
Recently companies have developed books and courses that have claimed to produce results of 10,000 words per minute plus a high level of comprehension. With specific reference to pseudoscience concepts, companies have claimed to be able to extract meaning out of consciously unnoticed text from the para-consciousness or subconscious. Whatever your goals are there is a speed study course that is right for you.
