What helps speed readers read faster? Before we get into the details of speed reading techniques, let us understand why people read slowly. From childhood we have all been taught to read in a way that slows down the reading speed.
Regression is one of the major factors contributing to slower reading speed. Some studies have shown that 30-40% of time is spent in regression. Regression or re-reading is going back to the text that you have already read. You may read the same text twice or thrice depending on your physiological and psychological state. You are prompted to re-read because of lack of understanding of what you have read.
Sub-vocalization is another phenomenon which makes reading slower. You need to hear your voice wither aloud or in the mind to understand the meaning. Speech recognition happen maximum at a speed of 500 to 600 words per minute. Sub-vocalization limits the reading speed to the speed recognition speed. If you break away from this habit and read text as if you are watching a video or picture you can read at a much higher speed.
You can think much faster than you speak. Theoretically reading speed should be comparable to thinking speed. But in reality this is not so. While we are reading, our mind tends to wander to other thoughts. This is because of lack of concentration. Concentration levels can also be dependent on your physiological and psychological state. You will find that after a long day at office your concentration will be much less to read a business report.
You do not have to read word by word to understand the meaning. Reading speed can be considerably improved by grouping words into blocks. Initially a block of words might contain just three to four words but with time and you reading skills you can increase it. As the number of words in each block increases so will your reading speed.
Sometimes it is not so important to read all words in the reading material. Reading all the words can slow down the reading speed. You can skim and scan information to gather what you want. The technique of skimming and scanning comes over a period of time. When you get started to practice this only simple reading material should be considered. It is more difficult to skim and scan if you are into serious reading like a business report or a medical assessment.
A speed reader is capable of reading faster by combining many techniques of reading. Previewing and glancing across the reading material to get a fair idea of what to look for is one of the important aspects of speed reading. Speed readers always mind read which means they tend to read as fast as they think. Another unique aspect is that they can adjust their reading speeds to the material that they are reading. Serious reading needs more focused reading and will be done at a slower speed while a newspaper can be read at a much higher speed.
Speed reading is a voluntary self improvement tool. Anyone from any walk of life can adopt it to improve his personality.
